Every year, thousands of research papers describe something new: a compound, a material, a process, a piece of software. Very few of them ever reach a shelf, a hospital, or a factory floor. This isn’t because the science is weak. It’s because turning a discovery into something usable involves a different set of skills entirely, and most researchers were never trained to do it.
Stanford University offers one of the clearest, longest-running records of what this process looks like when it works. Over fiscal year 2025 alone, the university’s Office of Technology Licensing generated more than $88 million in licensing revenue from 1,014 revenue-producing technologies, while its Industrial Contracts Office brought in another $97 million in research funding. Since the 1930s, Stanford faculty and alumni have started more than 39,900 companies, including Google, Cisco, and Tableau. Google itself began as a graduate student project: Larry Page and Sergey Brin’s PageRank algorithm was licensed from Stanford before it became the company we know today.
Numbers like these are often used to suggest that commercialization is inevitable once the science is good enough. It isn’t. Most university technology transfer offices operate at a loss or barely break even, and fewer than 1% of licensed technologies ever generate over a million dollars in revenue. Stanford’s results are not typical. They are the outcome of decades of infrastructure: a dedicated licensing office, patent lawyers, industry contacts, and a culture where faculty are expected to think about application, not just publication.
This is the real reason initiatives like IISE 2026 exist. An exhibition alone does not close the distance between a laboratory and a market. What actually helps is putting people who understand commercialization (investors, industry buyers, licensing specialists, manufacturers) in the same room as the researchers, at the same time, with a structured way to talk business rather than just present findings. That is what the Innovation Marketplace format is built around: not a showcase, but a working session where a piece of research and a company with a problem to solve are placed in front of each other on purpose.
For a researcher walking into an event like this, the practical question isn’t “is my work interesting.” It’s “who has the budget, the license, and the manufacturing capacity to take this further, and how do I get fifteen minutes with them.” That is a business conversation, not a scientific one, and it’s usually the missing piece.
